LEADERSHIP

Over twenty years of teaching in the outdoors has taught me leadership skills that transfer directly to the business world.

___

Lead from everywhere, and let others shine.

A NOLS instructor and student enjoy a moment in the wilderness.

Build relationships.

A young skier and her instructor celebrate a milestone of double black diamonds.

Set people up for success. Meet them where they are and give them the tools to exceed their goals.

An outdoor educator teaches wilderness first aid.

Be resilient, expect the unexpected, and stay calm when things go wrong.

A ski instructor shows how to rotate her legs under her as she skis a blue run.

Don't be afraid to fail. Sometimes we learn the best lessons from falling down.

CURRICULUM VITAE | LEADERSHIP

Heather Baltzley sits at the top of a mountain pass in Telluride, Colorado.

Ski Instructor at Telluride Ski Resort (USA) and Turoa Ski Field (NZ)

Winters 1999 - 2022  |  Telluride, CO, USA and Ohakune, New Zealand

PSIA Level 3 Ski, AASI Level 2 Snowboard, and Children’s Accredited Instructor

My job as an instructor required me to understand the learning processes of any age and the developmental/physical changes that allow us to ski and snowboard. I also needed to manage the safety of all my students, no matter their age or ability. I developed life-long relationships with many of my clients with whom I continue to keep in contact.

Field Instructor at NOLS

Summers 2007 - 2017  |  Lander, WY, USA

As a former field instructor, myself and my co-instructors led groups of 10-15 students for 30-day long remote wilderness expeditions. With a focus on leadership, we taught and assessed a full outdoor education, leadership, and environmental curriculum. From Leave No Trace to cooking, from group dynamics to risk management, I mentored my students to meet—and exceed—the goals they set for themselves at the start of the course.

Trip Director at Wilderness Ventures

Summers 2004 - 2007  |  Jackson, WY, USA

I led and managed outdoor adventure trips in the US and Europe. These trips included everything: backpacking, climbing, sea kayaking, white water rafting (day and overnight) and/or mountain climbing. I managed every aspect of the trip, from the kids’ safety to sub-contractor coordination, as well as office paperwork and trip finances.

a work in progress.
